Gap Wants You to Have a Freaks and Geeks Fall
The grounded grunge and neo-nerd fits of the best Back to School show of all time are reemerging from an unexpectedly mainstream source.
When I was approached to write a sponsored post about Gap’s back to school offerings, I hesitated… for about 0.02 seconds, because if you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know I am at the whim of the financially barren fashion writing industry! Luckily, once I took a peek at what Gap was working with in its new arrivals section, I was immediately sold to the point that if I hadn’t been getting some clothes sent to me for this review, I’d have been up a creek.
Someone on the Gap design team has been rewatching one of my favorite shows of all time, 1999’s one and only season of Freaks and Geeks, a show about a run-of-the-mill high school in nowheresville, USA at the start of the ‘80s. With it, Paul Feig and Judd Apatow launched the careers of a slew of beloved and behated figures that dominate the screens to this day: Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, Dave Franco’s creepy brother, and more. Its understated, sometimes caustic humor and quotidian tenderness encapsulate a (notably EXTREMELY white) facet of the high school experience that is more about substance and subtext than aesthetics.
Though the show’s costuming is perhaps even more understated than its writing, it does what fashion theorist rian phin has discussed re: the ‘90s and early aughts, in that it represents the era’s stylistic identity as it was actually worn by most people in the mainstream—and yes, despite the show’s titular assignation of its stars to the categories of “freaks” or “geeks” (or, as with its protagonist, Lindsay Weir, somewhere on the spectrum between), the teens are baldly mainstream in their near-painfully ‘80s efforts to appear subversive somehow. Rather than serving up a blatantly romanticized version of ‘80s fashion designed to tantalize audiences in the future, costume designer Debra McGuire mainly stuck to hyperrealistic depictions of characters without unlimited budgets or access to Pinterest. She largely did this by picking out pieces that reminded her of her ‘70s childhood in a cringe-inducing way—a great smell test for era accuracy.
The best part of Freaks and Geeks’ costuming situation is that every single character rewears almost every piece in their wardrobes multiple times, if not every single episode. Lindsay’s green army jacket is the most obviously iconic piece that is now inseparable from the production, but Kim Kelly’s reversible blue puffer, Daniel Desario’s not-yet-beat-up leather jacket, Bill Haverchuck’s aviator frames, and more garments and accessories make the characters feel completely grounded in the reality of a middling suburban budget, growth spurts, and the “phase”-iness of teenage personal style. The costumes also reflect the newly-growing sense of androgyny in fashion that was still nascent but coming into serious play by the ‘80s—most of the cast’s clothes would “make sense” (in terms of rather conventional gender legibility) on any other cast member, just shedding a different light on each character.
Gap’s Back to School M.O. is epitomized in its offering of a field jacket very similar to Lindsay’s, designed with a relaxed fit, straight cut, and utilitarian pockets, and modeled by both feminine and masculine-presenting models on its website. Starting a few years ago, the brand has been playing around with this gender-agnostic product photography, most notably with a pair of ‘90s-inspired jeans that went viral on TikTok a while back, advertised in the “men’s” section but modeled by people of apparently different genders and accompanied by cross-gender sizing advice (which was wrong, by the way—order your usual size!). We’re not yet at the day where Gap will dare to showcase its more feminine options on masculine models, but I dare to hope, because it’s a fact that Nick and Daniel would don Gap’s crop tops and short shorts if the characters existed in the year 2026, if only to further their nefarious softboy/fuckboy agendas.
The other facet of Gap’s latest arrivals that feels so Freaks and Geeks-ian to me is its encouragement of uniform dressing and rewearability—instead of falling victim to hypertrendy silhouettes and pieces that don’t make sense unless worn in one specific way, Gap sticks to its meat and potatoes of mix-and-matchable essentials that, though designed with an eye toward 2026 sensibilities, feel timeless enough that I wouldn’t bat an eye if I saw them on screen during a flashback sequence. Layering, wearing things outside of their most straightforward use cases, and rewearing things to death is encouraged by the brand’s use of a lot of natural fibers, focus on utilitarian details, and strategic colorway options that seem to pull directly from these crazy kids’ closets. The more stylized options on the site right now lean heavily on stripes and plaid, the two most plentiful patterns on the show, instead of capitulating to more trendy polka dots and animal print—I happen to like them all, but it’s another point for the fact that someone at Gap is currently in their Feig/Apatow bag.
Below, thoughts on some of the more inspiring and iconic looks and pieces worn by the Freaks and Geeks kids during its all-too-brief run, then a HOST of shoppable outfits I styled using solely a handful of Gap pieces and thrifted/vintage accompaniments inspired by the show’s unforgettably wry sense of style. My goal here was to demonstrate the capsule wardrobe potential of the brand’s current offerings and how appropriate the show is for Back to School inspiration, whether you’re actually returning to high school in September (God bless and I’m sorry) or just sense the waves of maudlin-but-magical renewal and potential that seem to float in on the first cold currents.

This frame is one of the most inspiring to me in the whole series: Lindsay’s perfectly oversized green army jacket, of course—a weirdly trendy subversion of military style that became an icon of the anti Vietnam War movement and rebellious adolescents attempting to bite off it—plus a perfect late-’70s striped polo sans buttons (called a “Johnny collar,” I believe?) and the strap of her proto-boho woven crossbody bag.
We’re not gonna talk about the man behind Daniel Desario because why would we, but the character had great style and was especially adept at layering, favoring dark undershirts with high necks under lighter, slightly-unbuttoned pieces and light thermals under short-sleeved, bowling alley-style button-ups and band tees.
Notably, the characters do almost nothing with their hair during the series, not even wearing it up almost ever, ‘80s grunge meeting ‘90s minimalism meeting high school laziness.
Starting with the classic army jacket—Lindsay’s has a zipper, but this one might look best fully buttoned up, worn shirt-style. I married Lindsay’s jacket with Daniel’s and leaned into the mod/rockabilly vibe with my hair and a short skirt. This look is stretching the concept pretty far, but I felt extremely hot when I went out in it! The field jacket was shockingly not too hot to be worn as a top on an 80 degree night but I do think it would insulate well in the winter.
Army jacket redux, this time with a Millie-style sweater, chintzy vintage track pants, and Sam-esque blue Sambas to match the sweater.
Last army jacket look features a vintage striped polo any of the nerd triumvirate would have rocked—there are some pretty great striped polos in the Gap Men’s section right now, and I’m partial to how the knit ones drape over the shoulders. Stripes on stripes on stripes here with the retro athletic shorts and nice thick Gap double-striped tube socks plus the Sambas!
Sam Weir, my beloved. You might not think it from the first episode (or this photo), but little bro Sam’s style is some of the best in the series, starting out simple with his penchant for variegated stripes on top. Also note the brownish and purplish denim on both siblings.
Okay, it’s uncanny: here it looks like Lindsay is wearing a slightly more muted version of THEEEEE Gap striped sweater, coincidentally released in 1999, same as Freaks and Geeks… did Lindsay Weir push over the first domino in a chain that has now led to Gap’s one big L of the year? Am I allowed to write that in a sponsored post? We’ll see if this gets cut! I freaking love Sam’s seemingly once again buttonless polo in a dashing, elementary cobalt and with dots as stripes, plus his canvas belt with a kid-friendly buckle (stop I’m going to cry) and Casio-looking watch, which reminds me I need to order a new calculator one, STAT (DON’T accidentally spray yours with sunscreen!).
The love I feel for these three boys transcends maternal and becomes spiritual. Sam, Neal, and Bill, (Son, Father, and Holy Spirit, in that order) know their SHIT when it comes to pairing primary colors with less-saturated neutrals. Sam’s blue Adidas kicks inspired me to break out my own below, though I don’t own a shark shirt that cool, sadly. More on Bill’s look below. Neal……….. hey, at least he’s wearing nice brown boat shoes!
No, but like, actually? Aviator frames the perfect balance of rounded and squared off, a western-style polo with embroidery at the shoulders, A SUBTLE GOLD CHAIN?????? WHO WAS DRESSING THIS KID???????
Classic 3/4 sleeve, color block raglan shirts are IMPORTANT HERE, take heed. As are what I believe to be called “yoke” T-shirts, as seen here on Bill—I had never given much thought to this style of tee bisected at the upper chest by a horizontal line in an athletic-feeling style, but apparently it was iconic in the ‘70s and is now a rare vintage find. Matching his POPSICLE to his shirt and what appear to be Keds? God, he was so cool. I also respect Neal’s vest-over-button-up swag and like that sometimes the shirt appears to be a flannel—gotta let the grunge in somehow, amiright?
A tribute to Neal and to the velour tracksuit I distinctly remember Sam wearing at some point but can’t find photo evidence of online: velour vest over gorgeous dusty rose button-up, layered Desario-style over a black Gap mockneck tank. The tank is my new daily driver at work, where my uniform is all black and I want to feel sexy but not exposed—its collar is the ABSOLUTE PERFECT length to extend my neck. I can see it looking insanely good on literally anyone, and this is one of the few cases where 100% natural fibers is NOT what you want—the modal makes it light, cool, and clingy only in the right way. The jeans are from the Gap “men’s” section—shockingly, the 28 inch inseam fits me PERFECTLY at 5 foot 1 with a stunningly subtle scrunch at the hem. You all know how I feel about the length of a fly on denim, and boy does this pair deliver.
And here comes into play the Desario penchant for pants tucked into boots (and layering up top!). These gauzy culottes would only be worn by Lindsay after she followed the Grateful Dead, but they are simply too comfortable and gorgeously-shaped to leave out of this roundup. Light and airy but thick enough to not feel exposed, I can wear these pants to work, to a mosh pit, to bed, I’m not joking, they’re the pants I’d want to have drawn on me if I were a cartoon character and could only have one outfit, that’s how comfortable they are and how sexy they make me feel. I love the low-slung waist. 100% frickin cotton, baby. These are the pants of my summer and it would be a privilege to have them continue to be the pants of my year as fall approaches.
These are obviously the boys’ gym outfits, but I just had to establish that ringer tees are an important part of this show’s visual code.
Similarly, just had to shout out Sam in his Big Bud Press/007 bag.
Onto the freaks… Daniel D’s aforementioned layering rears its pretty head (plus a belt chain, swag) and I love Nick’s raglan tee, with the dark/light colors reversed and steeply-angled shoulder stitches. I think his pants are maroon, too, which connects with the brownish and purplish bottoms we saw earlier.
Nick in a tee he canonically stole from Bill (the characters came back to life and told me so), plus his ever-present denim jacket, a holdover from the ‘70s not yet subjected to the acid washes of the ‘80s.

This looks like it could be terrycloth or velour? Could it be??? Another great “Johnny collar,” either way, this one with a breast pocket.
Classic DD layering situation, plus straight-legged Teen Boy Jeans tucked into boots (this will become relevant later). Is it just me, or does Daniel kind of dress like……… Bella Swan?
I am simply saying.
Now that I’m thinking about it, Bella kind of looks like Daniel and Lindsay’s baby. And I can’t unsee it. Oops!
Ok last DD jumpscare, but had to contextualize the beanie-isms below.
A la Nick or the iconic, previously unmentioned Ken (that’s Seth Rogen), I had to work a denim jacket into these looks somehow, so I did a Canadian tux here with a stripy tee I think Bill or Sam would wear, plus Neal’s vest, and a GORGEOUS Gap plaid shirt around my waist—twill, not flannel but 100% cotton. Light but sturdy and perfectly-hued, this shirt along with the green jacket was the catalyst for my revelation that Gap is in its Freaks and Geeks bag right now.
Another denim jacket look, this one with the beloved mockneck and flannel paired together above the wonderfully light and breezy Gap drop-waist maxi skirt, which I rec you size down on because even though it’s 100% cotton, the pintuck design is extremely expansive! The random vintage beanie I had matching the shirt is kismet. Ken would wear this fit if he came out as genderfluid which is actually an extremely likely thing for Ken to do.
Another Desario Special (TM) but with the collared shirt layered UNDER the tee instead of over! How about that? Plus, big news: the Gap “men’s” jeans fit into boots!
Of course, we have the girls! There’s the legendary Kim Kelly, whose bitchy smoky eye is practically the only drop of makeup we see on the show, and who rocks a baby blue puffer jacket that…
…seems to be reversible? Ok, maybe it’s two different jackets and I’m crazy, but these COULD be reverse sides of one jacket. In fact, they SHOULD be. I’d buy it! Also, here’s a better shot of Lindsay’s aforementioned proto-boho bag which is somehow the dorkiest piece in the entire show but I love it nonetheless.
Oh, Millie… I actually do love the fact that the plaid interior of her coat shows that she’s not COMPLETELY immune to the creep of grunge, and its colors are lovely, even moreso juxtaposed with such a sweetly embroidered and gorgeously scallop-necked sweater.
Another great Millie sweater, and…. WHAT is she wearing underneath? A tulle ruff? What in the Molly Goddard??? I love it, I love her.
I fell so head over heels for this Gap 100% cotton roll neck sweater that I actually asked for another one in a second color and Gap provided. It’s The sweater. The shoulders drop PRECISELY where you want them to, the shape is the exact level of boxiness paired with the exact level of drape you want for a transitional weather or layering sweater, and the neck is rolled as if by a French chef crafting the most delicate pastry imaginable. Parfait. Also sorry that the free software I used to cut myself out of photos chose to make my neck look unutterably blocky here for some reason. Anyway, this is not only The sweater, but it’s The Freaks and Geeks sweater—Millie would’ve worn it, Lindsay would’ve won it, Sam would’ve worn it, CINDY SANDERS would have worn it (sorry for leaving you out of this whole post, Cindy Sanders):
And you know what? I think half of them would’ve worn it striped. Fortunately, it comes in stripes.
It might be hard to tell, but this is the chocolate brown color of the Gap sweater as opposed to the black above. This fit is kind of silly, but I thought of it as an ode to the Nerd triumvirate, since it combines three button-up shirts of different levels of freak and geek, two as skirt, one under sweater, into a laundry pile of a look. I added a vintage Gresham Gophers pin from a local high school to really punctuate that Back to School energy this post has carried, and with a pair of Mary Janes I look like I’m ready to either kick it with the geeks or, well, smoke Mary Jane with the freaks.
Needed to include a few pieces that Gap is offering right now I didn’t try but would fit riiiiight in to any of these looks or variations thereof, including a hardy-looking, beautifully-drapey raglan…
…a dazzlingly patinated denim jacket…
…and the crop top I said Nick and Daniel would wear to wreak havoc upon womankind in 2026.
