If the ex boss is who I suspect it is that revelation of how much money they spend on themselves enrages me even more…anyway your newsletter has always stuck out from the crowd to me in your creativity and the quality of your writing. Instead of shilling for the same 5 brands everyone does you’ve introduced me to so many small and international designers I never would have known about. I hope and truly believe those with the means, taste and integrity to fairly support and credit you for your work will find you.
This happened to me when I was younger, details differ, but the financial result was the same. I think SO many people are/will/have going/go/gone through this and most people just don't tell anyone, and I think it's AMAZING that you are being honest about what you are dealing with.
Burnout is so real right now, I’m right there with you. But you’re super talented and I fear you’re *one* step away from something big happening…Authenticity is becoming a currency of its own, anyhow!
i've learned about many awesome designers from this newsletter i would've never found otherwise. i 100% feel you with how hard it is to find a job/make a living right now. hoping for all the best for you, you're one of the only people in the fashion world who deserve it <3
I find your radical honesty and humor so encouraging! I also find myself in the same position in many areas of my life. Personally, I started playing dress up games to help cope with my spending addiction, only to find that, yet again, those who spend the most money are the most rewarded...
I started reading you after you wrote for another popular substack newsletter on fashion. I like your unique and personal perspective- very different take than the owner of the newsletter. Sorry for your troubles. Your uniqueness and interesting taste makes it hard to scale for masses with basic taste and affiliate links. Keep being yourself. I hope it is rewarded greatly 🫶🏼
Em, you are a fantastic writer. I do hope that you find your place as a writer, but girl in the meantime I hope you'll fight to pay off those bills by any (legal) means necessary. Even if it means temporarily writing less so you can work more, even at a job you don't love, the weight that you will feel lift off your shoulders when you can pay some bills will be worth it. I know that people your age have been dealt an exceptionally bad hand--but it won't be this hard forever. Get over the hump by any means necessary, then reassess when the clouds begin to part.
I love your writing, and have an appreciation for you highlighting talent as well as the real shit. You have an eye, as well as being an excellent writer/editor. Don’t let these covert narcissist(s) get you down( or throw you down the stairs with a trunk and say oops. Stand strong and make meaningful connections and relationships with people who have a sense of respect and community. I love what you are building!
